Meet Ashley
My journey with horses began as a young girl with my first horse, Misti. What started as a childhood love quickly became a lifelong passion. I spent years working hard at a show barn on Grosse Ile, eventually making my way into the A Circuit Arabian show world. I learned an incredible amount during those years, but over time, something began to feel out of place. The mechanics of what we were asking horses to do with their bodies didn’t always feel right to me, and I found myself questioning whether the traditional path of training and showing was truly the path I wanted to follow. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to step away from the show world.
After moving to Northern Michigan, I ran my own horse training and lesson program while continuing to search for a better way of working with horses. During that time, I discovered Warwick Schiller and his relationship-based approach to horsemanship. His philosophy opened my eyes to a different way of thinking—one centered around connection, communication, partnership, and understanding the horse rather than simply focusing on what we want the horse to do.
My desire to understand horses on a deeper level has continued to shape my journey. I had the opportunity to attend the Horse Brain Science Clinic with neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Peters, learning more about the horse’s brain, behavior, and how neuroscience can help us better understand our horses. I continue to take classes and expand my knowledge through the study and practice of Craniosacral work, with a growing focus on balance, body awareness, comfort, and overall horse health.
I am also a Level 1 Reiki practitioner, currently continuing my education with the goal of becoming a Reiki Master. Alongside my Craniosacral studies, I am an aspiring osteopath, continuing to explore different approaches to understanding the body, movement, balance, and overall well-being. I’m passionate about bringing together the knowledge I gain from each of these areas while always continuing to learn and grow.
As my understanding has evolved, so has the work I want to offer. I’ve moved away from traditional horse training and lessons and am now focusing my energy on Craniosacral work, horse health, and helping people better understand and connect with their horses.
Outside of my work with horses, I’m a wife and mom to two young children. My family and I are fortunate to call our own farm home, where life is shared with our horses, chickens, goats, ducks, several cats, and dogs. Our home is always full of animals, activity, and plenty of everyday farm adventures.
My journey has taken me through the show ring, training barns, lessons, and many different approaches to horsemanship. Through it all, I’ve continued to ask questions, learn, and search for a better path. Today, I believe that true horsemanship begins with relationship and partnership—and that understanding the horse as a whole is at the heart of everything I do.
Another important piece of my journey has been my own experience with mental health. Walking through my own challenges gave me a much deeper understanding and appreciation for how important it is to have safe spaces, meaningful connections, and support during the times in life when we need them most. It also helped me recognize just how powerful the presence of horses can be—not because they need to fix us, but because of the quiet, honest space they can create for us to simply be present.
That personal understanding has made the mission of MKM Equine Therapeutic Services, the nonprofit sister program to MKM Equine Synergy Services, especially close to my heart. The nonprofit was created around the belief that connection with horses can provide opportunities for mental and emotional wellness, confidence, personal growth, mindfulness, and connection.
For me, the two programs complement each other in a very meaningful way. Through MKM Equine Therapeutic Services, the focus is on supporting people and creating opportunities for connection, growth, and emotional well-being alongside horses. Through MKM Equine Synergy Services, my focus has shifted toward supporting the horse—helping them find greater comfort, balance, relaxation, and overall wellness through craniosacral work and my continued study of whole-horse health.
My own mental health journey has given me an even greater appreciation for both sides of that relationship. Horses can give so much to us, and I believe it is equally important that we listen to them, care for their nervous systems and bodies, respect what they communicate, and make their well-being a priority.
In many ways, that has become one of the threads connecting everything I do: supporting the people who need the horse while also supporting the horse who gives so much to the people.
